From Budva to Kotor Without a Car: How to Spend the Perfect Day on Your Own

Imagine you've arrived in the popular seaside town of Budva. Everything is going great: you've already explored the beautiful Old Town, relaxed on the beach, and enjoyed a boat ride along the Budva Riviera.

But everywhere you look online, you keep seeing photos of Kotor's Old Town, its famous 1,500 steps, the breathtaking Bay of Kotor, and the enormous cruise ships docked along the waterfront. The picturesque promenade invites you to explore, and you really want to visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site and take a boat trip around the bay.

There's just one problem - you don't have a car.

It doesn't matter why. Maybe you don't feel comfortable driving in an unfamiliar mountainous country, you're not old enough to rent a car, or perhaps you simply didn't book one in advance and only the most expensive rental options are still available.

So what can you do?

Hiring a private driver is certainly a great option, but if you're traveling on a limited budget, it's better to save that expense for visiting more remote parts of Montenegro and explore the Bay of Kotor on your own.

Of course, it's impossible to see everything in a single day. However, even a self-guided trip will allow you to discover the Bay of Kotor, visit its main attractions, and create unforgettable memories.

Start by taking a taxi or a bus from Budva to Kotor:

The Old Town is about a 10-minute walk from Kotor's bus station. Wander through its narrow stone streets and enjoy the atmosphere and architecture of this ancient town.

Afterward, just a short walk from the Old Town walls, join a boat tour around the bay. Most tours include a stop in Perast - a small town with great historical significance.

Keep in mind that you'll experience the towns of the Bay of Kotor from the best possible viewpoint - the sea. From here, you'll enjoy spectacular views of the unique combination of mountains, crystal-clear water, and centuries-old settlements lining the coast.

After the boat trip, enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants.

If you still have some energy left, take the shuttle to the lower station of the Kotor Cable Car and ride to the top. From there, you'll be rewarded with one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Bay of Kotor.

This itinerary may not be perfect, but for travelers on a budget, it's one of the most convenient ways to discover the region independently - without renting a car or hiring a private driver.
